Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic was considered one of the greatest challenges of our century, which saw nurses facing an unprecedented health emergency on the front line. The emergency situation has subjected healthcare workers to specific risk factors related to patient care, and substantial changes in work as regards organizational, relational and safety-related aspects. These aspects have put a strain on the physical and psychological well-being of healthcare workers, and consequently also on the quality of care for patients and their families. Among the helping professions that daily carry out their activities in close contact with the sick we find nurses operating in the Oncology and Hematology departments. These are workers already normally subjected to an important emotional burden, caused by daily exposure to suffering, from the loss of one's patients, from loved ones often overworked and, consequently,at greater risk of Burnout. The aim of the study is to evaluate whether the Covid-19 pandemic has improved, worsened or left the risk of Burnout unchanged in the nurses working at the COM.It was administered a questionnaire to the sample under study, consisting of 30 items, of which 22 are characteristic of the Maslach Burnout Inventory, and 8 formulated ad hoc for research. The questionnaire administered evaluates 3 specific aspects of Burnout: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal gratification. Analysis of the data found that 78% of nurses had moderate burnout over the reporting period. 22% had high burnout. None had low-grade burnout. So, the Covid-19 pandemic had a negative impact on the psychophysical well-being of the nurses studied, in particular for the organization of work during the emergency period.
