Abstract
The paper deals with the importance of the figure of the cancer caregiver as a primary source of support for the patient, mainly in the palliative care phase, and in particular the stressful effects of caring for a sick relative in relational, economic, working terms, emotional, physical and mental health. Particular attention is paid to the psychosocial and emotional implications resulting from the caregiving experience and to the needs, sometimes unexpressed, that caregivers present. The importance of the nurse figure in recognizing the needs and possible frailties present in caregivers through a helping relationship based on communication and active listening is then described, as well as the importance of informative, educational, counseling and on bereavement in support of the caregiver. The nursing diagnosis of "Tension in the role of caregiver" was also treated by integrating nursing interventions with the literature in order to reinforce the interventions and the important role of the oncology nurse. From the report it emerged that the most unmet needs of caregivers concern good communication, this could be improved by implementing training programs for health professionals, in particular for cancer nurses. disorders.
