Abstract

The thesis that follows deals with the relationship between postpartum depression and breastfeeding. The purpose of this paper is to show evidence of the influence brought to new mothers by depression during the period of breastfeeding and whether it benefits women with mental disorders. To carry out this thesis research engines PubMed and UpToDate were used by typing the keywords "breastfeeding", "postpartum", "depression", “risk", and "mental health". The first chapter presents possible psychic disorders in postpartum, with a focus on postpartum depression, the related risk factors in onset and criteria for identifying the disorder. The second chapter deals with breastfeeding, its mechanism, the benefits for mother and baby and its promotion by presenting the guidelines of the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and Ministry of Health. There is also a review of 6 articles in which the correlation between two events is highlighted. The third chapter mentions Ministerial Decree 739/94, which formalizes the professional profile of the nurse, to present the duties and the role in the field of mental health. Finally, the fourth chapter presents a clinical case and the respective care planning. The recipient in question is a 30-year-old woman, mother of a 3-month-old girl, who after alerting the staff of the ward with unusual behavior was subject to an assessment for the identification of possible mental disorders.
