Abstract
This compilation thesis paper investigates the outbreak of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) and in particular the risk of contagion in nursing staff. The outbreak took place in the city of Wuhan in China last December and then spread progressively and very quickly around the world, forcing the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare COVID-19 as a pandemic. The paper is structured in three parts: in the initial one the topic analyzes the outbreak of the disease, the pathogenesis and the symptomatology; the second part investigates the mode of transmission of the disease, researches the methods of prevention through personal behaviors and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and finally outlines a study on the experimental pharmacological therapies currently in use. In the final part, a risk assessment and exposure management of healthcare workers is exhibited and the impact that the new coronavirus has on physical and mental health is observed. In conclusion, it can be said that COVID-19 has a strong impact on the physical and mental health of nurses and that the risk of contagion is particularly high, therefore it is necessary to be adequately protected through the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), proper hand hygiene, psychological support services for nursing staff and ensuring adequate work shifts.
