Abstract

The topic addressed in this paper deals with Burnout syndrome in relation to emergency room nurses. A review of the literature has been carried out for the thesis, ranging from bibliographical sources to websites. Among the books used, in addition to the works of Maslach and collaborators, texts by various authors have been reviewed, with particular reference to "Quando ogni passione è spenta" by Santinello and Negrisolo (2009). In addition to these, extensive use of scientific articles found on PubMed has also been made, through key words such as: burnout, nurses, emergency room, stress and assistance; interposing Boolean operators between them. The research has shown that the ER, in comparison with other operating units, is a context at a high risk of burnout due to numerous elements such as: the heterogeneity of clinical cases, close contact with suffering and death or acting under the strong influence of time. It is a disorder of a complex and multifactorial nature whose consequences lead to a compromised state of well-being. To date, it is not particularly easy to diagnose, especially in the absence of specific diagnostic criteria officially recognized by the scientific community. For this reason, it is important to focus on preventive activity in order to protect not only the operators’ health but also the safety of the patients. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to raise awareness about this issue and to promote the importance of effective prevention, proposing a standardized care model for burnout ER nurses. The model proposed was formulated with reference to the NNN taxonomies with the goal of caring for carers.
