Abstract
This compilation thesis investigates the management and the treatment of the pediatric patient suffering from epilepsy, with particular attention to the quality of life of these children and their family who are forced to endure this terrible condition, and the role of nurses in therapeutic family education. The purpose of the study is to have a precise and definite vision of epilepsy, since this condition has an important impact on the quality of life of these patients, and also to learn what it is like living with this type of disability, from both the child and the family, also analyzing what are the primary needs that may arise. This work is organized as follows: the first part presents the main concepts to define epilepsy and epileptic seizures, its spread and its diagnosis. Afterwards, there is an explanation of the main treatments: pharmacological, surgical and the use of the ketogenic diet. While, in the second part of the work, it will be underlined the quality of life and the psychological impact of children with epilepsy, analyzing the main discomforts and obstacles that children may experience during their lives, as children themselves refer in some of the testimonies reported. Finally, it will be illustrated the role of the nurse and the therapeutic education towards the child, the family and school. All in all, it can be said that education by healthcare professionals can significantly improve the quality of life of both the child suffering from epilepsy and all the people around him/her.
