Abstract

That of missing or late treatment of pain in the emergency room is a problem of great importance. Around 70% of people who go to the emergency room suffer painful symptoms, regardless of being sharp pain or the exacerbation of a chronic condition. The subject of this thesis are the nursing activities of assessment and early treatment of pain. Method: an evaluation of the literature and an analysis of the nursing treatment procedures of pain in triage were performed. Criticality: it emerges that the early treatment of pain in people who access the emergency room is still insufficient. Conclusions: proper assessment and punctual pain-relieving treatment through the application of validated protocols are essential to address the problem of pain, especially when avoidable; through these procedures, it is possible to obtain an improvement of the health state of the awaiting patient, an enhancement to the role of the triage nurse and better collaboration by the patient. The main question is the fact that, to date, there are still few specific protocols on the national territory: for this reason, it is of primary importance their implementation, as well as continuous and specific training of health personnel, and a health-education campaign towards citizens, aimed at raising awareness on the main factors that could limit adequate pain management.
