Abstract

The prevention of HIV infection is important to decrease the trend of new HIV diagnosis, and in that, the figure of the nurse continues to be of fundamental importance. Among the various prevention tools there is pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a pharmacological treatment that can be daily on or request, and is addressed to all HIV-negative subjects who are at high risk of contracting the infection. Through the review of international and national guidelines and studies, PrEP was found to be highly effective in preventing HIV infection, allowing people who use it to be able to manage their fears and anxieties related to the situation. However, it does not protect against other sexually transmitted diseases and moreover, good adherence to the therapeutic regimen is required to ensure optimal effectiveness of the treatment. For this reasons, PrEP should be integrated together with other well-know and valid prevention tools (such as condoms) and modulating a therapeutic regimen that can take into account the needs of the individual. The nurse has the skills necessary to provide quality services, such as therapeutic education and personalized counseling both for HIV-positive people but also for anyone who needs it. As part of PrEP, the nurse is involved in supporting the doctor to follow the patient at the beginning and throughout the follow-up.
