Abstract
Already working as O.S.S. in a psychiatric hospital, I often asked myself questions such as: How did the closed ward where I work come about? What kind of hospitalization does it offer and to what kind of patients? From a therapeutic and social point of view, does it make sense to exist this method of containment? How is the work of the psychiatric nurse compared to that of the nurse in other departments? How to improve the work of the closed ward nurse in terms of relationship to make the patients stay better accordingly. The general objective that I set myself was to observe and analyze the closed ward in all its aspects. My research begins with the modern history of psychiatry, more precisely from the turning point in the psychiatric field of the law 180/1978 the so-called Basaglia Law which closed the asylums by moving the mentally ill in the territory, the birth of the NHS, and the of the services present today on the Italian territory. The second chapter deals with the problems of mental health, mental illness, the classification of mental illnesses and some numbers regarding the structures, the incidence of mental disorders in the world and in Italy in order to underline the importance of psychiatric treatment. The third chapter develops nursing care for the psychiatric patient in the protected ward starting from the professional profile, the code of ethics to better understand the nurse's skills, to conclude with the part that differentiates the psychiatric ward from all the other wards and the relationship it is created between the operator and the acute patient.
