Abstract

Introduction. Since the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2, health professionals have been at the forefront of the pandemic in various settings of the health service, exposed to the risk of infection and emotional overload. Purpose of the research. The study aims to examine the psychological implications that the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has caused on health care professionals. Specifically, we analyzed a sample of 40 nurses in non-intensive wards of the Ospedale Civile of Baggiovara between march and may 2020. The research aims at collecting and analyzing perceptions, emotions and changes implemented in order to face in the most effective way the health emergency presented. Materials and Methods. The research is characterized by a qualitative interview, with the aim of directly accessing the perspective of the subject studied. In addition to the questionnaire, a statistical software was used to encode the answers and describe them by graph. An additional tool was the 5-point Likert Scale, used to decipher some answers regarding the possession of the necessary skills, the support of the team received and the satisfaction of the assistance provided. Results. In addition to the collaboration and collegiality on the part of the nurses, it can be seen at the same time that the feelings felt are mainly: fear, anxiety, tiredness, insomnia, anger and frustration. It should be emphasized that an increased level of these symptoms can result in several psychological problems. Conclusions. In a possible state of mental decompensation, immediate psychological support is necessary for all health workers involved in the front line in the fight against the pandemic that will accompany them in the post-emergency. It proves fundamental to reach the goal aimed at the maximum possible protection of personnel, both psychological and physical.
