Abstract

The research takes in consideration the role and the evolution of the competences that the 118 nurse possesses, in particular regarding the identification and management of acute intoxications caused by substances of abuse, subdivided in cases with and without protocol, alongside the description of a pertaining clinical case. The choice of the subject was motivated by personal interest and by a direct experience with a case of overdose. The method used for the drafting of my dissertation was a narrative review of the literature and a nursing care plan with NNN Taxonomies. The bibliographical research was carried out through the analysis of textbooks, manuals, websites, operating protocols, official documents of the Region Emilia-Romagna and scientific articles found on data banks such as Google Scholar, CINAHL, PubMed, Elsevier and Springerlink. The study shows that the figure of the nurse has evolved deeply from its earliest beginnings and that the specific training is fundamental for an adequate evaluation and handling of the patient in the territorial context, specifically in cases of overdose caused by psychoactive drugs, in which the identification of effects, signs and symptoms, the application of operating algorithms and the consequent treatment, become fundamental for the safeguard and survival of the patient, as demonstrated by the case report. Nevertheless, as underlined by some mentioned facts, the recognition of full nursing autonomy is a subject which is still being debated, therefore the necessity of finding strategies aimed at valorizing operativity should be highlighted, specifically in the field of outside hospital emergency and urgent care, in which the nurse occupies a central role in regards of the event.
