Abstract

This dissertation aims to explore the information, knowledge and approach that a nurse must use in the assistance and education of a patient undergoing radical cystectomy with orthotopic neobladder reconstruction. The objective is to define bladder cancer, the symptoms that may arise, the possible diagnostic path, radical cystectomy as a therapeutic treatment for patients with high-grade urothelial cancer and the creation of an orthotopic neobladder and its physical, functional consequences and possible complications related to surgery. Nursing care’s analysis will be divided into pre and post-operative phases, focusing on prevention and well-being development as well as on the education of the patient, who must play an active, aware and participatory role in the promotion and protection of their own health. The objectives that the nurse aims to achieve, by establishing a relationship of trust with the patient, provide that the person is able to accept the pathology, to cope with the surgery and how to independently manage his new condition, which involves various alterations, including urination and sexuality, recovering his autonomy and maintaining a good quality of life.
