Abstract

Emotions and the way in which they affect the life of the individual is an extremely topical issue which, in the pandemic period, greatly affected the professional figure of the nurse and the assistance provided by the latter. The frontline nurse was subjected to an extremely significant work and psychological-emotional load, even if this aspect was often underestimated and little investigated, due to the health emergency that has affected all the world’s countries as a result of Coronavirus. The aim of this work is to explore the psychological-emotional experience of nurses, in order to investigate the emotions, feelings and any somatic manifestations during nursing care for patients with Covid-19 positive results. A semi-structured interview was conducted on the Nursing Coordinator of an RSA in the province of Modena, leading to a qualitative-phenomenological research. The interview’s results, along with studies reported in the literature, highlight the prevalence of negative emotions during the assistance to Covid-19 positive patients throughout the whole pandemic period. Among these, powerlessness and fear are the most commonly encountered. In the professional sphere, uncertainty and lack of knowledge undermine the stability of a concrete profession where the lack of control leads to a decline in authority and a more superficial approach to nursing. The relationship with the patients is strongly compromised and wherever the relationship is care there is a psycho-physical decline of the patients which sometimes leads to unfortunate results. The vacuum that generates a compromised resilience of the operator leads in turn to an impairment of the personal sphere. Not working safely has generated uncertainty and fear of getting sick, or making sick those who actually need to be treated. It is necessary to intervene promptly against the possible evolution of these emotions towards anxiety and depressive states through peer support systems.
