Abstract

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a practice mostly spread in the sub-Saharan area, but has extended in Europe and Italy thanks to the phenomenon of immigration. Because of the several health complications it causes, it’s not unusual for a health care provider to assist a patient with FGM. For this reason nurses and other health care professionals must be prepared to deal with those kind of patients in order to ensure them the higher quality of assistance. They must be able to identify and manage health complications and recognize their key-role in the prevention of this practice. By comprehending the background and knowing the laws related, nurses can familiarize with FGM’s topic and represent a trustworthy reference point for the woman, her family and the community. After establishing a trusting relationship, it will be easier to achieve successful educational intervention.
