Abstract

This thesis focuses on measles, which is still a threath to the Health System in Italy, despite being a vaccine-preventable disease, due to the non-achievement of the WHO recommended percentage of vaccination coverage, which would be 95% of the population. Vaccine hesitancy, defined as “delay in acceptance or refusal of vaccines despite availability of vaccine services, influenced by different factors”, is a widespread phenomenon, due to the popular use of social media. In order to address vaccine hesitancy, nurses can take advantage of effective tools to ensure the spread of health information among a large amount of people. After retracing the history of modern vaccinations and their mechanism of action, the attention moves to measles clinical and epidemiological aspects and to the elimination strategies adopted by WHO through the years. Moreover, the nursing role and skills in adressing vaccine hesitancy are defined. Afterwards, using the NANDA-I, NOC and NIC taxonomy, it is reported the care planning for parents who hesitate to vaccinate their own children against measles. Starting from this, the idea to design an educational intervention called “@proteggimidalmorbillo” was born, an Instagram profile has been created, in which common myths on vaccination, according to literature review, are debunked by giving evidence-based information through a tailored communication for the identified target, which is represented by young mothers. The bibliographic research was made by consulting databases such as CINAHL and PubMed and websites as WHO, Ministery of Health, European Centre of Disease and Control and Italian National Institute of Health.
