Abstract

The elaborate addresses the issue of the alcohol use disorder (AUD) and the dual diagnosis, with references to the appropriate nursing care in order to offer the best service and support to the patient. In the first chapter the definition of alcoholism and its bio-psycho-social causes linked to the disease are clearly explained. In the following chapter the alcohol-correlated pathologies are introduced together with their signs and symptoms. The third and last chapter of the thesis paper is focused on the definition of dual diagnosis. In addition, the importance of the nurse-patient relationship is emphasized because it represents an imperative when talking about the treatment adherence and the entire recovery pathway of the patient. Therefore topics such as the psychiatric and clinical diagnosis, the acceptance, the interview and the discussion of the treatment plan will be explored. In the final section of the paper, a reference will be made to the group of Alcoholics Anonymous. The reason behind the choice to include this focus on the A.A. group, with the addition of a testimony, is to explain more clearly the support that this association offers to alcoholic patients. The concluding part of the elaborate will provide information on local services that are available for the assisted discharge process. Throughout the entire elaborate some nursing diagnosis are included together with some of the target goals and measures that are more suitable for alcoholic or dual diagnosis patients. The bibliography research has been conducted by following different guide lines, such as the NANDA, NOC and NIC Taxonomy Plans. Several databases such as CINHAL, PubMed and other websites have been consulted. And finally, the key words used during the research were “alcoholism”, “nursing care”, “dual diagnosis” and “relationship”.
