Abstract

Mental health is an essential part of a person's health and well-being and aids in their social fulfillment. Nowadays, mental disorders, which are constantly increasing, constitute one of the main sufferings and disabilities in the world. When mental illness strikes a family member, a malaise is generated that affects not only him, but also those around him: one person is ill, but the entire family suffers. The effects of the illness also lead to an imbalance in family dynamics: changes in roles, decisions that are difficult to take and daily challenges. Not only relational and emotional stability is compromised, but also economic and social aspects. However, family members can also be a very important resource in the therapeutic project and often become the person's caregivers. The illness also threatens the family and being exposed to a high risk of burden, it must receive the necessary assistance from health professionals. The role of the nurse in this area is aimed at providing necessary support, informing and educating the family/caregiver. Nursing in mental disorders provides a family-centered approach, in which the nurse informs family members about the signs and symptoms of the disease, the diagnosis, expectations and necessary interventions aimed to resolve the pathology. The family is taught how to manage stress, release negative emotions and how to cope with crisis situations. Finally, the nurse plays the role of mediator between the family and the community, bringing to the knowledge of the first the dedicated social assistance interventions, the existence of voluntary associations and family members, the possibility of taking advantage of the facilities provided by the National Health Service as well as existing psychoeducational interventions, meeting groups and all the resources available to the territory.
