Abstract

Introduction: The JLB is a single lumen polyurethane peripheral catheter which can be used close to a central catheter. Purpose: Verify the feasibility, effectiveness and safety of using the JLB in the Neurology / Stroke Unit department in patients with high nursing and pharmacological load. Method: Evaluating the positioning and management of the device by nurses after an appropriate training course, the effectiveness in the infusion of drugs with high phlebotoxic potential, in the execution of venous samples, and the safety in terms of related complications (septic, thrombosis, hematomas, obstructions). Results: Among 962 inpatients admitted between February and October 2020, a continuous series of 49 inpatients were treated with JLB (mean age 74.96 years and female prevalence: 27/49). Average duration of the device: 7.10 days; average duration of hospitalization: 11.49; days and the positioning time: 11.82 minutes. Only 8 patients presented complications, also considering drugs with high osmolarity (Mannitol, Aciclovir, Potassium). Failures occurred in 3 inpatients, fever in 11; most of the devices, especially in the second period, were placed by nurses. Conclusions: The preliminary data shows a good feasibility in the routine use of the device, good efficacy and safety even with phlebotoxic infusion drugs. Keywords: JLB, CVC, PVC, stroke, nursing.
