Abstract

Introduction: The coronavirus epidemic and related social distancing measures have brought about dramatic changes in people's lives. In particular, many changes have been required of health workers in outpatient services of Modena during the coronavirus outbreak period, from 1 March to 31 August 2020, with the same period of 2019. Materials and methods: This preliminary study is retrospective observational type. The demographic and clinical data of the patients who required urgent psychiatric consultation in the outpatients services in Modena during the 6-month of observation in 2019 and 2020, were collected on a database and statistically analyzed. Results: 1467 urgent psychiatric consultations were analyzed, 656 in 2019 and 811 in 2020, requested by 804 patients, respectively 424 in 2919 and 380 in 2020. The following differences were observed between the two periods: an increased number of urgent consultations carried out in the outpatient services, an increase in the average number of consultations per day, an increase in consultations for patients already taken care of local services, with a reduction in the number of consultations per patient. During 2020, the outcome of urgent psychiatric consultations was more frequently represented by a discharge at home, avoiding hospitalization.as much possible. Conclusions: Our results show that, in the course of coronavirus pandemic, the most clinically and socially vulnerable patients are those who required more urgent consultations by outpatient psychiatric services, which had to deal with an increased demand for clinical activity, carried out in large part electronically.
