Abstract

The incannulation of a peripheral vein is one of the most common procedures performed in the hospitalized children in any health condition, as through that it is possible to execute test and diagnostic-therapeutic exams. Because of the anxiety and the pain that it can generate, this procedure might be the most traumatic experience that the children can experience and remember of the medical care, with possible psychological impact both short and long term. The literature highlights that this procedure does not just scares the children, but that there is a correlation between the anxiety and pain that the child can feel and the parent’s anxiety. The nurses that work with children must know how to use a variety of tools for the reduction of procedural pain both pharmacological, with the collaboration with the doctor, and non-pharmacological in autonomy. The reference literature record that the informative process, provided from the nurse to the parents and children before the procedure, with the addition of a local anaesthetic and the distraction techniques, it turned out to be effective on the reduction of anxiety, distress and pain. Explain to the child and to the parents the purpose and phases of the procedure, affects to the compliance and the confidence that is created with the little patient and the parents and it allows to achieve a higher collaboration from both sides. To provide a more detailed information, it’s suggested to give to the parents at the entrance to the hospital a brochure edited in a clear and simple way that provides useful tips of how to act before and through the procedure and what to do during the preservation of the device in order to reduce the discomfort and the anxiety of their child, promoting the acceptance of the procedure.
