Abstract

Organ donation in donors after cardiocirculatory death (DCD) is a method which offers new perspectives in order to increase the number of usable organs and to decrease the risk of transplant failure and complications. The clinical and organizational complexity of this process requires professional skills of a multidisciplinary team and involves the implementation of care interventions aimed to preserve the organs from the damage of warm ischemia, which is possible through the use of regional normothermic perfusion with ECMO. The nurse has a central role in the organ donation process, since he is responsible for both clinical-care and logistical-organizational aspects. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the phases of donation and the importance of the nurse in care procedures to controlled DCD in the intensive care unit: starting with the identification of the potential donor, during the phase of observation and maintenance of vital functions up to the preservation of organs after the diagnosis of death.
