Abstract
The aim of the dissertation is to analyse which tools are available to health care professionals to educate ostomates about parastomal hernia prevention, a complication that may arise as a result of intestinal stoma creation. The incidence of parastomal hernia is significantly high and negatively affects the ostomates’ quality of life. In order to prevent this complication the intervention examined available to health professionals concern the education of patient both in the pre and pos-operative period; before the surgical procedure research shows that the pre-operative interview with the patient, along with pre-operative design, education on the principles to follow for a healthy and balanced diet, the optimal maintenance of body weight and the teaching of physical exercises for strengthening abdominal muscles decrease the incidence of parastomal hernia. In the post-operative path instead is recommended the use of supportive garments, practice physical activities and exercises and psychological support. The education of the assisted to the prevention of the parastomal hernia allows them to live a better life by reducing the hernia development and preserving their heatlh and well-being; therefore all health professionals should be active promoters of this prevention programme.
