Abstract

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease, which affects both the first motor neuron (at the level of the cerebral cortex) and the second motor neuron (at the level of the brain stem and spinal cord). A person with ALS can experience problems in the various contexts and activities of daily life. The main care setting in which these people are assisted is the territory, the home in particular, here it becomes important to develop specific paths for these medium-high intensity care situations. The therapeutic diagnostic pathways (PDTA) implemented in the province of Modena are tools that allow to take charge of the patient globally, in order to provide the best possible quality of life, throughout the various stages of the disease and in the continuity of hospital-territory care. The purpose of this elaboration is to research the role and the necessary skills of the nurse who assists the person affected by ALS, through the study of scientific literature, the implementation of the PDTA in the AUSL of Modena, in particular in the district of Carpi. For the review of the literature, Cinhal (EBSCO), Pudmed and Google Scholar databases were consulted as well as company articles and protocols, to discuss a clinical case. The review shows the importance of using pre-established pathways for ALS patients in relation to the change in the perceived quality of life index.
