Abstract

The pediatric population, cancers are the second leading cause of death after accidents, currently over 80% of children with cancer in high-income countries can be considered cured 5 years after diagnosis. Unfortunately, little is known about the etiology of pediatric cancers: unlike cancer in adults, the majority of childhood cancers have an unknown cause. According to the most recent report on pediatric cancers of AIRTUM, Italy is among the European countries with the highest incidence rates for childhood cancers. In pediatric oncology, the problem goes far beyond mere healing, but it meets profound needs for care and attention: from diagnosis to follow up, the care of the child and his family is total compared to their needs. The aim of this thesis is to explain how important the information and education of parents are during the entire duration of the treatment process and to emphasize the importance of the role of nurses in achieving the aforementioned goal. In particular, the paper focuses on the education of parents for an accurate management of the CVC once the little patient is discharged at home, with references to the professional and ethical duties inherent in nursing profile. In addition, a booklet has been created focusing on the description of CVCs, their management and care procedures and the possible complications related to them. The aid is designed as an useful handbook to guide parents in the correct management of the central line at home. The protocols of the Pediatric Oncohematology Department of Modena Polyclinic have been consulted to draft the brochure in order to create an ad hoc aid for its patients.
