Abstract

In this thesis work we wanted to analyze the borderline personality disorder and the life risks associated with the patient who is affected so, in particular, the risk of suicide. The psychiatric patient with this disorder, due to the emotional outbreaks and the aggressiveness that characterize its character, is highly unstable and frequently resorts to specialist psychiatric services in the throes of suicidal crises. Consequently, the therapeutic approach of the mental health nurse is crucial in order to prevent the risk as much as possible and to manage these crises through evidence-based interventions. For the preparation of the thesis, a review of the scientific literature was carried out through the interrogation of databases such as Oneclick and Pubmed. The dual purpose of this research is, on the one hand, to understand the instruments available to the nurse in order to prevent suicide and the role he plays in managing this risk and ensuring the safety of life; secondly, to investigate the effectiveness of current nursing training in relation to the psychiatric field. It has therefore emerged that there are validated tools that nurses can refer to to ensure personalised care and that develop around the needs of the patient, such as the establishment of an empathic relationship based on a human relationship of trust and active listening, the therapeutic contract and the development of security plans to manage crises. In addition, the need to expand nursing knowledge through the development of new resources such as clinical supervision and, also, to address the negative feelings and stigma that surround the patient with borderline personality disorder and that do not allow optimal assistance without prejudice.
