Abstract

INTRODUCTION: In the Italian emergency department, the nurse faces situations in which it is necessary to quickly arrange a vascular access. However, finding a valid peripheral access is often a complex operation: first, because there is not much time, due to the patient’s clinical instability; second, considering the patient’s need for later advanced care. Recently, a new tool for vascular access has been introduced: the intraosseous access. It is a valid alternative, because it is not only quick and easy to position, but it also allows to administer fluids and drugs during emergencies. Finally, it is extremely versatile, because it comprehends the use of different insertion sites. AIM: This research investigates the level of knowledge and use of the intraosseous access devices among the local emergency nurses of the Modena AUSL. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This observational study is based on the administration of a questionnaire to local emergency nurses 118 and first aid. In particular, the questionnaire has been structured in order to explore the knowledge about the new tool, the use of the technique and the possible reasons not to use it, the criteria for the selection of the insertion site and finally the different devices used. RESULTS: The collected answers show a high level of knowledge among the nurses in the PS and 118. However, the same cannot be said about the concrete use of the tool. As a matter of fact, the intraosseous access is considered the last modality of operation. CONCLUSION: The study highlights that nurses’ training and updating are essential to guarantee the correct and effective use of intraosseous access.
