Abstract

In the process of caring for cancer patients, the ability of the nurse to establish a therapeutic relationship based on trust appears to be one of the main elements in guaranteeing satisfactory and quality clinical emotional support. To this end it becomes desirable that the nurse develops and implements certain personal and professional skills. In an attempt to create a shared image of the cure, for not allow the patient to develop misconceptions about the care pathway the nurse can provide emotional, physical and social support by placing both the patient and the caregiver in the center of the relationship. The goal of this thesis is to analyze the skills needed by the oncology nurse to develop a relationship of trust and improve the quality of life of cancer patients throughout the care process. Databases such as OneClick, Pubmed and resources on the web were consulted. Primary studies, textbooks have emerged. The keywords used were trust, nursing, nurse, oncological patient, oncological setting, caregiver, cancer, relationship, communication, compassion, moral courage, emotional intelligence, with the combination of the boolean operator AND. From the analysis of the literature it emerged how important it is for an oncology nurse to have specific skills both with respect to communication and emotional intelligence to be developed through appropriate training to take care of the cancer patient within a relationship based on mutual respect, honesty and empathy and not only thinking in terms of the quantity of assistance provided, but also of quality, involving the caregiver as a fundamental figure in the treatment and care of the cancer patient. All this could generate satisfaction on both sides while enhancing the nurse's ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
