Abstract

Preterm birth frequently determines the newborn admission in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units, with the consequent necessity to adjust the modalities used to supply the care activities on the needs and the characteristics of both the little patients and their parents. This is the only way in which it is possible to carry out a care that allows a better neonatal development and the reduction of the negative outcomes, due to the preterm delivery and the admission in a critical care unit, involving both the preterm baby and his/her parents. So, this dissertation mainly focuses on the modalities used to supply a neonatal care which is centered on the Family-Centered Care model and the NIDCAP method. The choice of this topic emerged from a nursing apprenticeship experience I have done at Policlinico University-Hospital’s NICU, in Modena. Such decision aims at promoting the adoption of the two previously mentioned strategies in order to ameliorate the clinical outcomes and the development of the premature baby. Part of the papers consulted for the drafting of this work were found, from February 2020 to April 2020, on databases (CINAHL, PubMed, Cochrane Library, NRC+ and TripDatabase) and on reliable websites detected with “Google Chrome” search engine; other materials were bought, or obtained with the use of the online tools “BiblioMo” and “OPAC SBN”, and with the employment of the “NILDE” service. In general, less relevant documents, those that were published more than 5 years ago, and those that were not written in English or Italian were excluded. The main results supported and underlined the benefits coming from the application of FCC and NIDCAP in all the different ways they can be provided; in conclusion, the adoption of these methods is essential in order to classify at least as “good” the quality of the care supplied by NICU’s workers.
