Abstract

Background In 2019 the world was put to the test because of the SARS-Cov-2 disease that caused a real pandemic putting strong pressure on health professionals both physically and psychologically. Target The objective of this study was to investigate in the ICU nurses engaged in the care of patients COVID-19 what were their perceptions about the working environment and nursing care, their emotional and psychophysical state and coping strategies adopted and any consequences of their work in social relations. Methods All ICU nurses in direct care of COVID-19 patients were included in the study. A semi-structured 24-question telephone interview was conducted. The recording of calls using computer media has been carried out Results The study shows that the pandemic had a negative psychological impact on nurses, they were frequent states of fear, anguish, sadness and uncertainty. Most felt baffled by the situation but relying on the Team were able to overcome great obstacles. All the operators had sleep disorders and some also psychophysical disorders. No one benefited from psychological support and in some cases the operators felt discriminated against by society because of their profession. Conclusions Participants experienced a wide range of emotions. Providing a service for the protection of the mental health of professionals should be an essential part of the services offered by a healthcare company during the emergency. The psychological support should be provided in the various stages of the emergency and should be personalized on the individual in order to avoid adverse effects of stress even in the long run.
