Abstract

The topic covered in the thesis is the nursing management of central venous catheters in the pediatric patient and in the newborn. The role of the nurse in the management of these devices is fundamental, as good management involves a lower risk of complications and allows them a proper use. The importance of parental collaboration is also emphasized, as they must be able to recognize any complications that may be encountered with central venous access. The thesis talks about the various types of central venous catheter that are used in pediatric patients, why and how they are inserted. Next comes the nursing management of the catheter insertion site and its manipulation, therefore everything that involves changing in the medication or changing in the infusion lines based on what need to be infused. The third chapter deals with the complications that may arise both during insertion and throughout the time spent in the catheter. The last chapter of the thesis deals with the removal, when and for what reason. The method used to create the thesis is based on a bibliographic search performed on major primary sources, such as Cinahl and PubMed, on the use of the Gavecelt vascular access manual and using the guidelines provided by the Infusion Nursing Society of 2016 on vascular access. The key terms of the paper are "central venous catheter", "pediatrics", "newborn", "removal" and "complications". The objectives of the thesis can be considered achieved when all the nursing practices relating to central venous catheters are respected and when parents have received good training in everything they can do when the child is at home.
