Abstract

Present work is the assistance to the newborn with withdrawal syndrome namely "set of withdrawal symptoms observed in a newborn following exposure in utero to addictive substances or as a consequence of pharmacological treatment of post-partum pain" as defined by Herdman and Kamitsuru in the NANDA-I taxonomy (2018-2020), providing a definition of "drug addiction", describing the effects and the consequences that drugs of abuse cause during pregnancy by overcoming the hematoplacental barrier. Moreover, signs and symptoms that develop in newborn have been described, as well as pharmacological or non-pharmacological treatment applied after evaluation by means of Finnegan abstinence scoring sheet.
In taking charge of the newborn, nurse must define the appropriate nursing diagnoses in order to ensure the necessary care, planning the appropriate interventions. Therefore, the use of standardized taxonomies (NANDA-I, NOC and NIC) allows nursing team to identify the needs of the infant and its family, ensuring personalized and targeted interventions, in order to contain the onset of signs and symptoms and their complications. In the final phase, i.e. the phase of discharge and return to home, the team is given the task of educating the family or who ever is responsible, ensuring proper management of possible long-term symptoms.
