Abstract
Charcot's neuro-osteoarthropathy is a rare disease that mostly affects diabetic subjects with neuropathological problems.
During my internship in home care, I had to assist for the first time a patient with this rare disease whose impact on both the patient's and family's life is debilitating.
From my research on the scientific literature, I first became aware of the difficulty in investigating and recognizing the pathology due both to the presence of a few cases and to its signs and symptoms that are neglected by health professionals.
I also realized that the non-compliance with treatment by people most at risk poses a serious threat for a good care.
From my experience, and based on the evidence of literature, the presence of a trained and competent nursing professional figure is of fundamental importance. The nurse must be the reference person for prevention, early diagnosis and management of people potentially at risk.
In addition to the skills to early investigate the signs and symptoms of the disease and to direct patients to a multidisciplinary team, moral and psychological support is required not only for the patient but also for the family to improve the compliance with treatment.
