Abstract

Surgical interventions, carried out in election or urgent, remain mainly for the pediatric patient, a complex event to understand, manage and therefore stressful. For this reason, it is necessary to introduce non-pharmacological interventions to minimize the anxiety and stress that accompany this process. This prospective, observational, monocentric and control cohort study proposed non-pharmacological interventions that seem to be promising to reduce adverse events that surgery may involve. Materials and methods:
The population involved includes children aged 3 to 9, from Vignola Operating Units (exposed group) and Carpi (control group). Three validated scales (CEMS scale, APAIS scale, Wong-Baker scale) and a telephone questionnaire have been used to meet the objectives proposed in the study. Results: Statistical analysis showed a statistically significant level of anxiety (measured according to CEMS scale scores) in the control group, as well as for the results obtained by the Wong – Baker scale where the highest percentage of painkillers was always requested by the control group. Analysing the questionnaire, it was found that the most frequent disorders in
the follow-up period are pain, fear of healthcare professionals and fear of the hospital, while the only voices to have achieved significantness between the two groups are the increase in anxiety and aggression, which were greater in the control group. Finally, according to the APAIS scale, parents of the control group need more information about anesthesia and surgical procedure.
Conclusions: The results of the study show that the therapeutic game proposed by the paediatric information/training package helps to reduce anxiety in patients undergoing elective surgery.
