Abstract

The adoption of coercion procedures on mentally ill patients seems to be a present and actual issue that interferes with the quality of the treatments, the well-being of the patients and their families and the work of healthcare professionals. Coercive treatments could negatively impact the emotional and medical status of the patient. In the current paper possible methodologies that could reduce or remove physical coercion within mental treatment services are revised. In addition to this, this dissertation will talk about how psychiatry was conceptualized and implemented before the “Basaglia” law and after it, when healthcare practitioners gained a paramount role in the reduction of coercive procedures. Healthcare professionals are required to establish a therapeutic relationship of trust with the patients and to cooperate with a multidisciplinary team for a better care towards the people and for the reduction of aggressiveness episodes and, consequently, also physical restraining measures. The Psychiatric Diagnosis and Treatment Service of Modena experience is reported, which, since 2011, is involved in a project aimed at the employment of alternative measures, rather than constraint. The present dissertation, by means of the NANDA-I, NOC and NIC Taxonomy proposes a healthcare plan for those patients to whom the physical restrictions methodologies cannot be avoided.
