Abstract

In this paper, divided into six chapters, it was decided to investigate the impact that cancer and the therapies needed to combat it have on the sexual sphere in the life of a woman suffering from cancer. In the first chapter the female tumors are described: breast cancer and gynecological cancer, focusing in particular on their origin, on the degenerative process and on the relative surgical and therapeutic treatments. Subsequently the meaning of sexuality will be described which, including different aspects, represents an element of fundamental importance in the life of a person to preserve a good quality of life even during the course of the illness. Disease and therapies can inhibit the patient's sexual interest. This topic will be dealt with in the third chapter, where sexual dysfunctions will be analyzed, both from the physical point of view and with respect to the psychological and emotional repercussions. In the fourth chapter the concept of "couple" will be addressed and the effects that the disease, therapies and surgery can have on interpersonal dynamics as well as on the partner of women with female cancer. Subsequently the possible solutions that the couple can adopt to cope with this situation will be deepened. In the fifth chapter the role of the nurse will be analyzed, with particular reference to the figure of oncological nursing, to the sexological training that the nurse can acquire and to the assistance that this professional figure can offer to the patient throughout the course of care.
