Abstract

The goal of palliative care is to achieve the best possible quality of life for patients with terminal illness and their families.
Great contribution was given by law n. 38 of 2010 which expresses the right of all citizens to be able to access palliative care and pain therapy, with the aim of respecting the dignity of all citizens. Palliative care can be provided mainly at home, through a global management of the patient and the family and is carried out with the realization of the PAI (Individualized Care Plan).
The review of the literature carried out shows that the fundamental role of the nurse in the field of palliative care is to take care of the sick at 360 °, from the moment of communication of a poor prognosis up to the last moments of the patient's life. Ensuring continuity of care, controlling the main disturbing symptoms and supporting the family in a multidimensional and team approach are the great guidelines for responding to the needs of the patient in an advanced stage of illness. To complete the research, a nursing competence assistance plan was developed using the NNN Taxonomy (NANDA-I, NOC, NIC) which identifies the needs of the patient, who is taken care of by the palliative care team, and which it could be actionable interventions by the nurse to meet these needs.
