Abstract

Personalization of care has become one of the main themes and objectives of assistance in all healthcare contexts. From this perspective, the "Person-centered care" model was developed, and it is defined as an innovative approach to taking charge, whose main objective is to consider the needs, preferences and values of the client for the planning of the assistance. This study aims to investigate the perception of nursing staff towards the model, to analyze how it is implemented and the problems and limitations encountered by healthcare professionals. Therefore, a qualitative approach was chosen, and we suggested open-ended questions to a self-selected group of nurses working in a context of psychiatric care and rehabilitation. The interviews were conducted in the accredited private clinic "Villa Rosa" in Modena, during the months of July and August 2019, after getting the authorization by the Head of Nursing Staff and the coordinators of the operating units. The analyzed sample shows that the nurses know the model and they implement it through interventions that, in daily clinical practice, involve the patient in the care project, placing particular emphasis on building a dialogue and a relationship with the person; furthermore, a series of difficulties emerged, also confirmed by what we can find in the literature, mainly related to work overload. In conclusion, we believe that this research has highlighted some important aspects of the daily nursing reality, such as work-related stress, the existence of an unequal doctor-nurse relationship and that these factors significantly affect the quality of the assistance.
