Abstract

This thesis paper, structured in four chapters, aims to analyse essential patient needs in the preoperative phase and in the postoperative period, after esophagectomy surgery.
The aim of this thesis paper is giving information about this rare disease and its multidisciplinary management and promoting, with the brochure about jejunostomy care, the importance of nursing role, healthcare professional skilled at establishing a powerful relationship with the patient and caregivers, supporting, educating and in particular taking care.
For the realization of this project, I used the following keywords: esophageal-gastric cancer, artificial nutrition, jejunostomy feeding tube, pain, psychological aspects, quality of life, psycho-social assistance, ethical aspects.
The first chapter deals in depth with esophageal-gastric cancer: epidemiology and risk factors, clinical presentation, diagnosis and staging, multimodal treatment of localized disease.
The second chapter explains the oncological patient’s needs during the perioperative period: nutrition and pain, fundamental needs of relevant interest in nursing sector; in addition, this chapter focuses particularly on the importance of nutritional assessment during the preoperative phase, the enteral nutrition and the percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), and finally on postoperative pain management.
The third chapter explores how PEG impacts on patient’s daily life from a psycho-social and ethical point of view, explaining what are the consequences on patient quality of life and implications on caregivers or on patient relatives. Besides, this chapter focuses on the figure of nurse and how his/her role is perceived during the whole therapeutic pathway.
At last, in the fourth chapter I list the most important nursing diagnosis dedicated to the patient affected by gastroesophageal cancer.
