Abstract

Background. The ethical problem of allowing families to be present at the bedside of their loved ones began in the early 1980s. Today, resuscitation has become a common practice in many hospitals all around the world, mostly American ones. However, in Italy, the debate has only recently opened, so that there is not a lot of literature published about this topic.
Objective. To evaluate the benefits of the presence of family members during cardiopulmonary resuscitation on an adult patient, in an intra-hospital setting, taking into consideration all the outcomes concerning family members, health professionals and the patients themselves.
Method. The research was done on different databases: Cochrane Library, Center of Reviews and Dissemination, PubMed, CINAHL and PsycINFO. The research was carried out by two researchers independently, by using the PICOS method and according to the PRISMA Guidelines. The quality of the studies and the methodological accuracy of the reviews were evaluated through the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme questionnaire.
Main results. At the end of the selection, nine reviews were included in the overview; although some of them were not high quality reviews. The practice has been approved in all reviews by almost all family members and patients, while health professionals still have many opposing opinions and negative attitudes.
Conclusions. Although there is already some literature, this topic is still discussed. The aim is to implement protocols and/or procedures, through effective training of health professionals, to achieve a real change of opinion, practice and to improve the quality of care. Additional researches, carried out with unbending studies, are needed to expand the evidence available.
