Abstract

Background: Perinatal death is an event that affects approximately 5 children in 1,000 live births in Europe. An unfortunate prenatal diagnosis or perinatal death exposes parents to severe emotional and psychological suffering; This event also has a major emotional impact on health care personnel who often feel inadequate to support parents during this delicate phase.
Objectives: The objectives are: to define the impact of this event on nursing staff and the impact on nursing care, in order to define both specific and interdisciplinary nursing skills; identify experiences, experiences and coping strategies put in place by nurses who assist newborns in end-of-life intensive neonatal therapies; investigate how neonatal intensive care nurses take care of families before and after death; explore nurses' prospects for their preparation and/or capacity to provide family care.
Methodology: Phenomenological qualitative investigation through semi-structured interviews to be submitted to nurses who have experienced this experience at least once. An ad hoc research protocol has been devised for submission to the Ethics Committee.
Results and Conclusions: From the literature it has emerged that perinatal mourning has a very heavy emotional burden for health professionals. It turns out that it is emotionally difficult to remain in a supportive relationship with parents, despite the professional putting in place defensive mechanisms to protect himself. Other data from the various studies report the need for training, comparison and support among colleagues and the importance of interdisciplinary work. All the skills that derive from these roles, combined with teamwork with other professionals, lead to good management of perinatal grief care.
