Abstract

The thesis treats the post-operative delirium, a transient complication that usually arises in the first 24 hours after surgery. It is defined as a disorder of attention and awareness, which develops in a short time, with a trend fluctuating during the course of the day and which is often associated with another cognitive deficit. Post-operative delirium is common in all medical areas and affects elderly patients; however, this condition is often underdiagnosed. Extensive literature shows that prevention and early diagnosis of post-operative delirium are fundamental to improve their management, as well as non-pharmacological treatment is recognized as the most effective treatment. Through an analysis of the available scientific literature, I wanted to verify how an adequate knowledge of this syndrome is the first step to avoid its development and subsequently to carry out a proper management. At the end of the last chapter, it’s highlighted how the inclusion of training courses on this particular condition, with regular refresher meetings, may be a useful preventive tool for the development of post-operative delirium.
