Abstract

BACKGROUND
Antibiotic resistance is the phenomenon in which a microorganism is resistant to the activity of an antibiotic drug, originally effective for the treatment of infections caused by it. In the last twenty years the health system is facing an important challenge represented by the difficulty of treating infections, due to the increase of microorganisms resistant to more and more antibiotic drugs. Health care workers have always been active in the fight against resistant microorganisms, but the role of nursing care has always been accentuated superficially.
PURPOSE
The aim of the thesis is to give relevance to nursing competence in the management of antibiotics resistance, to suggest ways to increase nursing involvement and to highlight that integrating nursing care into antibiotic stewardship can offer an additional perspective to the phenomenon.
MATERIALS AND METHOD
A revision of the primary and secondary literature was carried out on the Cochrane Library, Cinahl and Google Scholar databases. Institutional sites were consulted to find recommendations and guidelines on antibiotic resistance. The bibliographic research focused on the critical reading of studies of the last five years.
Strings of research, antibiotics antibiotics AND resistance, AND stewardship, AND nursing; infection AND control, AND prevention, have returned 27 articles, but only 21 of them were considered pertinent to the aim of the study.
RESULTS
The basic information on antibiotic resistance and the recommendations contained in the literature offer countless reasons to strengthen the role of nurses in antibiotics management. Nurses represent a powerful componente with which to model an interdisciplinary Antimicrobial Stewardship improving the safety of patients and minimizing the spread of antibiotic resistance.
