Abstract

Background: education plays a fundamental role in fostering the acquisition of caring skills, a core indicator of the quality of nursing care. The lack of international studies that have investigated the development of caring in nursing students has led me to undertake this research.
Materials and Methods: an exploratory study was conducted with the aim of investigating students' perception of how they are applying, in terms of frequency, caring behaviors, in the current internship experience. Data collection took place through the administration of the anonymous questionnaire Caring Behaviors Inventory (CBI) to every students who attend the Bachelor Degree in Nursing in Modena.
Results: the response rate obtained (91%) was particularly high and it showed a full interest on the investigation. The survey tool showed a good internal consistency. The total CBI score increased from the first year to the third year, with a statistically significant difference. The global average value obtained by the subscribers who are attending the last semester of training was particularly high.
Findings: from the end of the first year, students' perception led them in addopting caring behaviors frequently, in particular on the interest and respect of the assisted person. Step by step during the years, the student stated an increase in the technical-practical sphere as well as etichal and relational one. Although it was an observational study, the results suggest that the learning method has favored students in applying the founding values of our profession.
