Abstract

Carbon monoxide is a gas produced by the incomplete combustion of solid, liquid or gaseous carbonaceous fuels. It is odorless, colorless, tasteless and highly toxic. These characteristics are the cause of extremely harmful effects on health; sometimes signs and symptoms are not immediately diagnosable.
Carbon monoxide poisoning is one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality from poisoning; it is estimated that in Italy carbon monoxide poisoning causes about 6000 hospitalizations and more than 350 deaths each year.
The purpose of the paper is to shed light the effects of acute carbon monoxide poisoning on our body and its respective nursing management at a non-hospital and hospital level.
The task of the team is to guarantee the support of the vital functions of the patient through routine investigations. Considering the general clinical picture, it is possible to direct the victim towards more specific treatments, such as hyperbaric chamber therapy.
In the thesis paper, the scientific literature has been revised through database searches: PubMed, Up To Date, Google scholar and using as keywords: "carbon intoxication", "injury", "poisoning", "nursing care".
The thesis will also include, through the NANDA-I, NOC and NIC Taxonomy, nursing diagnoses that allow the identification of the assistance activities useful for the resolution and for taking care of the patient suffering from acute carbon monoxide poisoning.
