Abstract

The entire scientific community agrees with the policy of "open" visits. The benefits perceived and observed are innumerable. The patient experiences improvements in vital signs, in orientation space-time and in anxiety. Relatives report a significant reduction in stress when they stay in the hospital, they feel more comfortable in the environment, they receive updating about the patient’s status and they trust more the operators. Finally, some professionals recognize an improved integration between the team and the family with a decrease in stress rates and a consequent burnout; on the contrary others feel a greater emotional involvement but also a decrease in their freedom of speech. The aim of this work is to explore the experience of nurses, in order to investigate their feelings when relatives participate in patients visits, who are receiving nurses’ care. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with intensive care units, leading to a phenomenological qualitative research. The results agree with what literature already stated. Educational and training programs to family members could reduce anxiety in patients, relatives and hospital staff. Sharing the information from the medical personnel to the family members could create a relaxed and collaborative atmosphere, as well as improving the trust by the relatives. The planning of periodic training meetings about clinical-assistance topics could reduce prejudices and create a more relaxed working atmosphere. The communicative factor clearly influences the clinical and relational management not only with patients but also with their relatives and the hospital team. In these environments the communication skills are essential during the care plan of the sick person.
