Abstract
The thesis aims to define the role of the nurse in the management of the abstinence syndrome of the newborn. Through a careful review of the literature it was possible to define, first of all, this pathology, to analyze the possible causes, the different substances involved and the incidence. Secondly, the most effective methods to do a correct prenatal care and diagnosis have been highlighted. The diagnosis includes the use of recommended evaluation tools, which guide health care professionals during the treatment and care of the newborn. In taking care of the newborn the nurse defines the appropriate nursing diagnoses, evaluates the results and plans the non-pharmacological interventions appropriate to the condition of a newborn affected by withdrawal syndrome. The use of standardized taxonomies (NANDA-I, NOC and NIC) allows the nurse to identify the needs of the newborn and the family and respond to them with targeted and personalized interventions, which limit the onset and severity of symptoms. Finally, the health team has the task of educating the family for the correct management of possible long-term symptoms at home.
