Abstract

The recovery room is a separated space within the surgical unit where patients from the operating rooms are admitted for a variable period of time depending on their condition, the type of intervention and the sedation carried out. During the short stay in the recovery room the patient is monitored by evaluating his vital parameters and his clinical condition, which, if altered, are promptly managed and treated.
For example, if nausea and vomiting occur, antiemetic drugs are administered, as well as analgesics in case of pain onset. There are some alternative therapies that aim to bring benefits through different techniques. Aromatherapy uses the essences of certain plants distilled into oils.
Chromotherapy, through the use of certain shades of colour, can change the patient's condition. Music therapy is based on the diffusion of melodies that can calm the patient. These three elements are capable of acting on aspects such as anxiety, fear, depression, state of consciousness, concentration and pain, producing measurable changes in vital parameters.
The use of these unconventional therapies should be considered as the drugs administered to relieve patients' symptoms may have several Adverse reactions, even unpleasant for the caregivers themselves. Conversely, aromatherapy, chromotherapy and music therapy bring benefits to the patient and have no contraindication.
Given their benefits, it would be appropriate to use these techniques in recovery rooms during the awakening phase of an operated patient.
