Abstract
Introduction: benzodiazepines misuse and abuse are phenomena in continuous expansion, regardless of age and gender, that can lead to dependence, abstinence, paradoxical effects and severe intoxication. Furthermore, abuse is very often associated with psychiatric problems, so cases like these are preferentially treated in Double Diagnosis Operating Units such as Villa Igea in the Modena area. Aim of this work was to illustrate benzodiazepines detoxification therapy by flumazenil. Methods: a bibliographic and sitographic research was carried-out using "benzodiazepines" and "flumazenil" as key words, and a case report about a patient hospitalized at Villa Igea Accredited Private Hospital in Modena was described. Regarding nursing diagnoses, NANDA-I, NOC and NIC taxonomy was used. The
operational protocol for benzodiazepine cessation by flumazenil in use at Villa Igea has been reported. Results: detoxification procedure was successful. The clinical and psychological conditions of subjects who misuse benzodiazepines were investigated. The main nursing activities and interventions were highlighted, confirming the importance of nursing diagnoses. The operational protocol for benzodiazepines cessation by flumazenil has been revealed effective. Conclusions: at the end of the hospitalization period, the patient treated at Villa Igea reached a state of non-dependence on benzodiazepines. The operational protocol was then successful.
