Abstract

BACKGROUND: Empathy is recognized as an essential component of the therapeutic relationship, which leads to better care outcomes and greater satisfaction of the assisted people. The lack of studies that have investigated the association between self-reported empathy by clinicians and the satisfaction of patients in an emergency-urgency context, has led me to undertake the present investigation.
OBJECTIVE: Analyze the association between physicians and nurses self-reported empathy and after-care instant patient-to-provider satisfaction at the time of discharge from the Emergency Department (ED).
RESEARCH DESIGN: A prospective observational study.
METHODS: The study conducted at the Emergency Department of the Sassuolo Hospital started on October 7 is still ongoing. The "Jefferson Scale of Empathy, Health Professions version" (JSE-HP) is used to assess provider empathy, while the patient satisfaction is explored through the self-compilation of the anonymous questionnaire of Wang et al., adapted to our context.
The study was approved by the Local Ethics Committee of Area Vasta Emilia Nord (protocol 0019082, July 3, 2019).
RESULTS: Nurses achieved a total average JSE-HP score of 109.8 (14.15) and physicians of 118.5 (9.61). Both health categories received an almost equal percentage of "satisfied" responses from patients.
CONCLUSION: The average value of empathy of health professionals was found to be high and higher than in the literature data. At the same time, satisfaction with the assistance expressed by patients discharged from the service was very high for both professional categories. At the moment it is premature to correlate the empathy of professionals with the level of patient satisfaction, as the survey is currently underway. Considering the commitment to design the study and the relevance of the purpose pursued, my hope is that it can be continued
