Abstract
One of the most frequent side effects of radio-chemotherapy is oral mucositis. Mucositis causes pain, difficulty in swallowing and feeding, and significantly alters a person's quality of life. The nurse plays an important role in the prevention and treatment of this disease, as he or she is able to recognize early signs and symptoms and to assess all the risks it involves.
The objective of the thesis is to provide a general description of the pathology, its consequences and list all the associated prevention and treatment strategies. A literature review was performed in order to determine the role of the nurse in the management of mucositis, integrating the use of the NNN taxonomy (NANDA-I, NOC, NIC).
The analysis shows that mucositis is a multidimensional phenomenon that requires a personalized holistic approach. Despite recent studies have considered new therapeutic interventions to date it is essential to correctly and continuously apply preventive treatments to reduce the onset of this complication.
